Street and Public Area Lighting

 

With the emergence of LED lighting, the potential to improve energy efficiency in street and public area lighting has become easily attainable. The only lack was of standards that are applicable to streetlighting in Mauritius, as European standards generally used for the designs in Mauritius, might not be appropriate, given the characteristics of the roads and pavements and the type of asphalt used in Mauritius, which absorbs much of the light produced.

 

A complete study on streetlighting in Mauritius was hence carried out, the implementation of the recommendations of which resulted in a standard and design guideline for new streetlighting installations as well as for retrofitting of existing street and public area lighting systems.  The design guideline, among others, specifies the type of lamps that can be used (to ensure efficient use of energy), their ratings, optimal distance between lamp posts and the height at which optimal lighting can be obtained, with due consideration to the local context and road characteristics.

As part of the study, pilot projects have been implemented in 2018 at 3 different sites, namely:

(i) Site 1 -  Ebene Cybercity (near to The Core) through Vandermeersch (near Au Bout du Monde);

(ii) Site 2 - Quartier Militaire Round About to Providence; and

(iii) ​Site 3 - Capucines Avenue, Sodnac Quatre Bornes.


The difference in energy consumption between the initial installation and new LED street lighting is as shown in the table below:​
