SURVEYS ON ENERGY USE AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Surveys on energy use and energy efficiency have been carried out in the hotel, industrial and SME sectors and services sector, with a view to obtaining disaggregated date for, inter alia, planning purposes. Details on the surveys and findings can be found hereunder.

HOTEL SECTOR

A survey on energy use and energy efficiency in hotels and hotels de charme was carried out in 2018 with the following objectives: to determine the type and quantity of fuel being used, details on different sources of electricity being employed and level of energy efficiency of the hotel/hotel de charme as well as to obtain details on energy consuming equipment.

The main findings of the survey are detailed below:

 1)      Electricity represents 69% of the energy consumption of hotels, while LPG and diesel represents 26% and 5% respectively;

 2)      60% and 30% of the hotels generate part or all their hot water from LPG and Diesel respectively.  Only 24% of the hotels have installed solar collectors for domestic hot water production;

 3)      Only 2 small hotels have installed solar PV for self-consumption and exportation to grid;

 4)     The main energy consuming equipment of hotels are air conditioning systems followed by kitchen;

 5)     The Energy Use Intensity calculated per meter square area and per room-night both show that EUI increases with the star rating of the hotel.

INDUSTRY AND SME SECTORS

A survey on energy use and energy efficiency in the Industrial and SME Sectors, was conducted in 2018 with the main objectives being, to obtain a breakdown of energy use in the industries and the SME sectors and to determine the level of energy efficiency of the industry facilities and SMEs, through Energy Use Intensity (EUI) calculations;

The main findings of the survey are detailed below:

 1)    The leading source of energy in 2015 for both Industrial and SME sectors was coal followed by electricity but in 2016, electricity became the leading source of energy;

 2)    The leading end use of energy for the two sectors combined was internal steam generation (ISG) during the three years followed by electric motors with 44.6% and 19.9% respectively;

 3)    Only 5% of the firms use solar water heaters and only two firms have solar photovoltaic installations;

 4)    The Energy Use Intensity calculated per Production unit shows that the EUI for the following subsectors were highest: manufacture of fabricated metal products, food products and plastic injection molding.

SERVICES SECTOR

The services sector comprises several subsectors, such as wholesale and retail trade, food services, ICT, Financial and Insurance, Professional, Scientific and Technical, education, Human Health and Social Work, Arts, Entertainment and Recreation. A survey on the energy use and energy efficiency in the services sector was conducted with the following objectives: to obtain a breakdown of energy use/energy consumption in the Services sector, to obtain details on the renewable energy technology installations and on stand-by generators installed in the sector and to determine the level of energy efficiency of the Services sector, through Energy Use Intensity (EUI) calculations.

The main findings of the survey are detailed below:

  1)   Electricity was found to be the leading source of energy at 55.7% followed by Gasoline which is at 23.3%;

  2)   The energy expense for the whole services sector was primarily Electricity at an aggregated 93.8%;

  3)   Electricity EUI per hour of operation is lowest for Food Services and highest for Storage at 3.5 kWh/hour of operation/year and 941.9 kWh/hour of operation/year respectively;

   4)  The Electricity energy use intensity per employee was highest for Storage followed by Arts, Entertainment and Recreation.
