Awareness Raising on Purchase and Use of Air Conditioning
We are increasingly relying on air conditioning for comfort cooling during the summer period. This trend has been exacerbated in the recent years due to the noticeable temperature rise and the greater affordability of air conditioners. Furthermore, air conditioning contributes significantly to the seasonal peak in electric demand. Through energy audit and survey data gathered over the past years in Mauritius, air Conditioning has been found to account for 40% to 60% of the overall energy use in commercial buildings. Likewise, it is estimated that the energy consumption of air conditioners accounts for roughly 15% of the total electricity consumed in the country.
In this respect, this Office has developed awareness raising material for the general public on the importance of considering energy efficiency as a criteria, through information provided in energy labels, when purchasing an air conditioner and on the need for proper installation, judicious use and regular maintenance of the unit. The materials also inform on the principles of air conditioning such that the public can have a better understanding of various means that can be employed to ensure efficient use of energy in air conditioning.
